Our Story
Why is Myofunctional Therapy a passion at Guardian Dental? In May of 2018 Leanna took an introductory myofunctional therapy course with the IAOM that would change the course of her Dental Hygiene Career. As a Registered Dental Hygienist since 1997, suffering with chronic neck, back and Jaw (TMJ) pain, one would assume that body wear and tear is part of the job. However, clenching and mild sleep apnea was taking a toll on her health and wellness. After applying the basic fundamentals of myofunctional therapy she was able to correct oral rest posture, strengthen and tone the tongue to dramatically reduce her issues in a short period of time. This is also where she met like minded Dr. Katherine Roche who practices general dentistry and early growth guidance intervention at Guardian Dental.

After several years of apprenticeship, Leanna achieved her Certified Orofacial Myology
(COM) designation in September of 2021. The COM designation is registered and accredited from the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). COM's work closely with dentists, doctors, ear nose and throat specialists (ENT's), speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, oral surgeons, chiropractors and airway focused orthodontists. Referrals to body workers such as osteopaths, massage therapists, acupuncturists are also common depending on the patient's needs. |
